Tertiary

The New Zealand Tertiary Education sector covers Private Training Establishments (PTEs), Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs), and Universities.

Secondary

New Zealand offers world leading education at secondary level. Secondary school study is usually five years long, from Year 9 (12 or 13 years old) to Year 13 (17 or 18 years old). Many private schools and state integrated schools include full programmes for students from Years 1 to 13, or Years 7 to 13.

Primary

Primary school usually begins at Year 1 (5 or 6 years old) and ends at Year 8 (11 or 12 years old). The last two years of primary school (Years 7 and 8) are often taken at a separate middle school, which is called an ‘Intermediate school’ in New Zealand. Many private schools and state integrated schools include full programmes for students from Years 1 to 13, or Years 7 to 13.

English Language

English is one of three national languages in New Zealand (the others are Te Reo Maori and sign language). Studying English in New Zealand is a perfect opportunity to learn about New Zealand culture, meet people from all over the world, and to prepare for study at other levels. All our English language schools are all based in central Wellington City locations. ESOL programmes are also offered as part of the school curriculum and ESOL/ foundation programmes are offered at tertiary providers.
